Whether you’re a mum starting your own business or looking to improve your existing business, there are some simple strategies that will help you to be more successful. Having mentored over 100 mums in business, these are the tips that I find consistently help people get better results.
1. Identify the things that excite you about your business.
What do you enjoy most about running your own business? This is an important question to ask yourself. When times are tough, you’ll need to find a source of energy and motivation. The answer(s) to this simple question can provide the motivation you need to kick it up a notch.
I’ve personally used the answers to this question to better shape how I complete my work. I actively look for ways to spend more time doing what I
The more you enjoy what you do, the more likely you are to spend the time required to become more valuable to the people paying you.
It has not always been that way. I actually learned the hard way, but when I learned to find my passion and link to my business, everything shifted.
2. Brainstorm the most important skills you need in order to become more successful.
Think about someone else in your industry that is more successful than you. What are the things they do well? Are they exceptional communicators? Do they better manage their time? Are they able to add value in unique ways?
I keep a wish list of things I want to learn in order to improve my career. Directly beneath each
But I tell you that the fastest route that helped me to master my craft was to find mentors who have done and achieved what I wanted to do and get on their coaching to learn directly from them. More on this later.
3. Create a realistic plan for getting better at these skills.
Some of the skills you identify will be easy to achieve. Others will require multiple different steps. Don’t fall into the trap of demanding overnight success from yourself. Be realistic and patient. Give yourself
the opportunity to fail.
Trying new things can be scary, but when you adopt a growth mindset and accept that you may fall down a few times, great things can happen in your career.
4. Find creative ways to consume new information about your industry.
One of Mark Cuban’s first businesses was a computer hardware sales company. Cuban had attended college, but he didn’t have a real tech background. So, he started reading everything he could get his hands on – magazines, books, product manuals, etc. – in order to learn the lingo and get up to speed.
Within seven years of opening, MicroSolutions was acquired by CompuServe for $6 million. Cuban didn’t go back to school. And he didn’t give up and work for someone else to gain experience. He became a vivacious consumer of information.
To unlock your full potential, it’s time to start learning as much as you can about your industry and everything surrounding it. You’ll sound more credible to your clients, and you might uncover new opportunities that take your business to the next level.
5. Foster relationships with mums or other people that know more than you about business
Beyond reading magazines, blogs and books, one of the best steps you can take
A conversation is also more personal than a blog or podcast episode. You can ask about the specific issues you’re facing and test out your strategies. The feedback you receive could completely change the direction of your business– saving you both time and money.
I have personally invested tens of thousands of dollars in coaching and mentorship. I have learned from the best. It has been worth all the financial investment. I would not have done it any other way.
No matter where you are in your journey, it’s always a good idea as a mum to find yourself a great business mentor. Invest in yourself, by expanding your horizons you’ll be more valuable to clients, and better able to identify worthwhile opportunities in your business.
