Personal Development Is Key To Success In Life And In Business - Josie Tong

Personal Development Is Key To Success In Life And In Business

When I was 28, my life changed forever.

I was introduced to personal development and my world has never been the same.

The day I picked up my first book was the day I really started to live.

That’s because I started to GROW.

Before that, my life was stagnant.

Everyday was the same.

But then, I learned through personal development that I could take charge of MY LIFE.

I could learn whatever I wanted!

I no longer had to depend on a boss or a teacher to guide me in my life.

I started to take control of my own life!

I read a book a month, listened to weekly cassettes and attending regular business meetings with huge proportion of personal development integrated to it.

I learned how personal development is one key factor to becoming successful in business and in life.

So it has become a daily habit for me.

My kids have seen me reading books and listening to audios to grow myself.

They see the huge bookcase I have full of personal development materials.

When we moved houses 3 years ago, we gave away 80% of what we owned.

The few things that we kept were our books and personal development materials such as CDs and DVDs.

One of my proudest moments as a mother is seeing my youngest daughter has taken interest in books.  When she was in primary school, she used to spend most of her allowance in books and she herself has a massive collection.

What does your personal development library look like?

Are you investing in your own personal growth and making it a priority?

Early in my professional career, I invested in developing my skills as a manager but nothing else.

Looking back, I’m glad that I joined a business where personal development was a huge component.

I have grown my confidence, improved my communication skills but most of all I learned how to lead myself and others.

I believe that investing in my personal development is the factor that made me a great leader in my profession and one of the highest paid nursing executives in Sydney at that time.

I once heard from a successful business person how he played personal development cassettes in his car which made her daughter’s eyes rolled many times.

However, years later his daughter grew up to be a successful author and entrepreneur and writes about how much she learned from those car rides which helped to mold her mindset and philosophy in life

I want my daughters to have the same experience.  I grew up in an environment where we only read the books for tests and projects for school. My mother never went to school and my father did not finish primary school.  So my introduction to personal development made a life changing impact for me.

One of my major goals as a parent is to pass on the same values to my children.  They may not understand the impact of it now but I have no doubt that they will thank me one day.

How about you?

Do you read and or listen to personal development everyday?

I know that people who are hugely successful invest in their own personal development and make a commitment to make it a daily habit.

I am excited for my children.

They will be ahead of the majority of children who just like me may not be introduced to personal development until they are 20, 30 or even 40 years old.

So here are the  books that have left an impact on my life:
